I have a three way with a switch at both the top and bottom of the stairs going upstairs and the light is at the top of the stairs. I got into a little bit of a bind by detaching the wires and not labeling them. I do know this: at the top of the stairs is a black, red and white wire, with the red being hot. At the bottom of the stairs is a black, red and white wire, with none being hot. Can someone help me determine which is the common and which are the travellers? Thank you.

If there is the one and only one cable in each box with 3 wires (and a possible ground) then it is wired like this.

Here is the possibe other ways that it might have been wired.

but those would require other cables in one or both boxes.

Note that there is possibilith that the wires where spliced ceiling box and the colors change.

try this.

with the power off. connect the 2 travlers togethr in the top box.

then find the 2 wires on the bottom box that show continuity.

those will be the travelers.
