I recently purchased a Craftsman Table Saw with a cast iron top and drop-through leaves. (model # 315.22849) When i pulled the unit form the box, the cast top and wings are coated with what i assume to be a protective coating. It is very thick, and irregular almost like wax.
Any ideas on how to clean this off? and then what should i do to maintain the top from rusting. My shop is in the garage, so not always heated leaves cool moisture in the air.

Hmmm! I bought a Craftsman Table saw with the CI wings too, it didn't come with any kind of coating. Ask ***** ! Keep a good coating of wax on your saw surfaces, I use Minwax, keeps the surfaces from rusting and makes 'em slippery, wood slides with ease.

Use Kerosene to wash off the packing grease,
Dry with a rag and then coat with paste wax.

DH...I tried kerosene and a rag....does not touch the stuff. I tried scrubbing, scraping and even letting it soak for a while first...nothing...any other ideas?

The coating is not liquid at all...it is has almost a solid, dry wax feel. But not slippery.
