Depth of Refrigerator

08/16/2008 10:57 AM shipek05

We are buying our first house and I am wondering if there is a general guideline for the depth of the fridge... we are contemplating several different size fridges... with handle included - they range from 4-9" sticking out past the fridge "nook" (don't know the terminology but it's wood work designed to frame the fridge). 9" sounds way too far tho so what's a good rule?
Thanks so much!

refrigerator sticking out.

I don't know that there is any 'rule of thumb' except that the cabinet itself (without ~3" doors!) would usually need to stick out from the enclosure at least somewhat (except on built-in models). So the cabinet + door thinkness + handles is what you're looking at. Cabinets are usually 24" deep.

The handle depth might not be a big concern depending on their actual design, the location of the fridge in the room and the traffic pattern around/past it.
