Is it possible to get an E1 error from lint build up in our 7yr old Kenmore Elite dryer? The error is sporadic and I'm curious if I should try to replace the thermistor or pay for a lint cleaning.

Whether paying for the lint cleaning makes sense is another issue...

It might occur from a lint (or fabric softener sheet residue) on the *thermistor* but not elsewhere in the dryer.

Those thermistors can act 'flaky' when they're failing even testing inconstantly. Many technicians will just replace them and do further checking if that didn't solve the problem.

Having the dryer cleaned (or more importantly the venting *all the way from the dryer to the outdoors* - see the following link) should be done several times a year as preventative maintenance and a safety precaution but it is unlikely to be the cause of your present condition IMO.
