Overactive Sump Pump

07/12/2008 10:07 AM Desperate

Over the past few days I've noticed that my sump pump has been working more or less constantly. My basement office where I work from is located next to the pump and I can hear the almost contant whirring sound. Is this a cause for concern? As always thanks in advance for comments.

It is hard to tell

just by what you told us. There are some things to be considered.
Is it raining more than usually where you live? Assuming the pump itself is working properly, I'd think there must've been some changes on the water table. A particularly rainy season, for example. But I'd recommend you to check a few things make sure there is not an extra amount of water being poured around your foundations.
For example... hoe clean are your gutters? Are the downspouts pouring the water away from the foundations?
How about the grading? Overtime, the soil tends to settle around the foundations after a while in some case sloping towards the foundation, rather than away from it.
If all those things are as they should be, and you still have concerns, have a waterproofing contractor take a look at the problem.
Some will do an inspection at no charge.
