My wife would like me to paint a quote on a shelve. Can I stain the shelf, paint a qoute on it, then poly it? Will it work if I use oil based stain and paint?

Just let the stain dry a day or two before you paint it. Also let the paint dry a couple of days before you put the poly over it and bear in mind the poly will darken/amber the paint some.
