I'm converting a slab covered patio into a screened porch. I have my heart set on wood flooring (pine or fur) to be painted with enamel porch paint. Through investigation I'd decided on glueing a 3/4 plywood deck onto slab, then nailing flooring down. At Home Depot last night the store manager (a friend) told me to just glue the boards directly to the slab. Any thoughts?

It will depend on where you are located and the possible moisture content of the slab, among other factors too numerous to mention without seeing the existing conditions.

The patio should also have had proper footings placed to support the new structure. Hopefully your contractor placed at least point load foundations to stop the slab from cracking.

Being a patio slab, there will be no moisture barrier, perimeter drain and no footings typically, as it was built only for exposed exterior and no loads taken into account.

In my humble opinion I would suggest you do a little research before getting into the expense of applying a wood floor.
