Please help with advice on beaver board aka maftex!

Help! I have inherited a home in New England--- fitted entirely with beaverboard ceilings and walls. I plan to fix it up and live in it.... it needs to be completely rewired. my elderly aunt tells me the walls are "insulated" w/ Maftex (beaver board) and not to worry because this will be plenty of insulation for our cold winters. I love her, but suspect she is very seriously misinformed. the walls are in pristine condition but we fear we will have to remove them and drywall the entire house so that we can install proper insulation (we're considering the expanding foam) and perform the necessary wiring. Please, if anyone has thoughts on any reason to keep the beaver board please let me know? I'm really hoping to save the expense of gutting and drywalling the entire home... but I fear it may be a necessary evil. Many thanks! -Mary
