Pool Light Wiring

08/17/2008 10:06 PM nradonich

We just installed a brand new Pool light, pulled the wire already, but we have yet to wire it up.

What I would like to do is have a regular outdoor switch for it, and the required GFCI breaker. However I cannot remember how to properly wire the switch & light to be protected by the GFCI if the light shorts out.

I would think the ground coming from the light would have to go up to the GFCI, but any help would be greatful. I would love to have it wired up and working as a gift to my father before he comes home from his trip.

Thanks!

What voltage is the bulb?
Is there a transformer?
Is the transformer and bonding done correctly?
Where does the light circuit originate?
Main Panel? Pool Panel? How old is the installation?

Pool Light

The light is a standard 110v pool light. It's already in the pool, and the wiring pulled. The panel is at the pool, single breaker for now, but it needs to be GFCI to be compliant.

The idea is to have the GFCI breaker in the panel, and a seperate, outdoor weatherized switch for the light, but not sure how to wire it so that the circuit will be protected.

Thanks,

It is in the pool. We had our pool re-done at the beginning of this year, so we also had a new Pool light installed. The wiring is already pulled over to where the box is, and the GFCI breaker is here, but we would like to wire up a regular outdoor light switch so we don't have to use the breaker as the switch.

Switch

Hopefully you are overlooking a transformer that steps the pool light voltage from 120 to 12volts.

If that is the case, and I really hope it is, connect the load side of the GFCI breaker to a single pole switch.

your gonna have to install the switch between the lite and the gfci.
so 1st you have to figure out were your gonna place the switch.
then just run the wire to/from the switch to hook up the lite and gfci.
