Every possible thing that could go wrong, has. Our latest is with custom built cabinetry. We ordered cabinets from a mennonite with no deposit down. The first thing done wrong was he ordered the wrong doors from another mennonite. I had gone by the shop to look at stain colors and discovered his mistake while talking with him. He said he didn't think he could change the order but in the end he did. Then the order was delayed--he told us he had cut his thumb off but actually it was just the tip. Finally the frames were made and the cabinets were ready to stain. He let us come by and look at a couple of colors that he had stained to the back of one of our doors and told us it could be stripped off. A couple of days later, we had stopped by to give him the hardware to go on the cabinets. This is when we discovered our next nightmare. The stain was HORRIBLE. Everything was a different shade and it was so mottled it look like leopard skin. After we said we could not accept the cabinets in this state, he said we would be responsible for having them stripped and restained or painted. Okay, so here is where I need some advice. Should we go ahead and accept the cabinets or just go somewhere else ---I don't want to stick anyone, but I don't want to get stuck with cabinets that weren't done correctly and have to live with someone else's mistake at a cost of several thousand dollars to me. The mennonites are will blacklist us and there really aren't that many cabinet makers in our area excpet for them. Help? Has anyone else out there had such a dilemna. He also told us that even if they were stripped and restained he didn't think that he could please us. If he is not sure, why would we be. Also, I was able to take one of the cabinet doors with me to show to woodworking shops and they said the cabinets probably would never turn out right because he used Minwax and it was the wrong kind of stain. These were solid wood cabinets-- not any of the cheap stuff. |
