I have an old house that needs some pipe replacing which I plan to do personally. However, before getting in to it I need to have a safe and trustable main shut off valve. The one i have now is old and sort of leaky. I could have the city shut off water at the curb to replace it but here is the problem, the main shut off valve is attached to a very old rusty pipe that disappears behind the wall in the basement and goes all the way to the curb. I am not a pro but I am afraid that if I unscrew the main valve away fomthe pipe I will be left with a highly corroded male thread on the pipe that cannot be reused. If that is the case, I should then have the pipe going to the curb also replaced. Ok so now is not a weekend project anymore.....
Does anyone know how expensive is to replace the lines from the curb to the house? we are talking about 50 feet and 1 foot deep.
I also think that brand new steel pipes in the ground from the curb will give the right pressure and hence no pressure drop in the house....

What ever it cost is well worth the peace of mind knowing in case of an emergency you can shut off the water.

The one in the picture looks like a globe type and the problem with globe valves on water mains is

1- very high friction loss

2- Washer will deteriorate over time thus rending the valve useless.

3- A globe valve is used for throttling NOT a positive shut off such as a gate or ball valve
