What should we use for composite deck?

08/14/2007 01:46 PM 1Melissa1

We are getting read to build a deck and are wanting to do a compostite, so far every one I've researched, Trex, Rhino, and another one I can't remember the name all have problems with mold, but haven't found any problems of mold with the Geo decking. Does anyone have the Geo deck that can confirm this?

GeoDeck

Melissa,

You are correct that GeoDeck does not have issues with mold like many other composites on the market. This is because GeoDeck contains no wood flour or filler like many of the other companies. The wood in many of the other brands actually provides a food for mold growth. This is also a big factor to help GeoDeck hold its color.

NOT GEO DECKING

08/17/2007 04:00 PM alouthan

I would not recommend the GEO Decking for your plans. My husband and I had a deck built 2 years ago with it, and we have had several rails and deck boards bust or detoriate. We have been in contact with the company and they have a recall on some of their materials. We are currently trying to get replacement parts, but the company is giving us the run around, and we cannot talk to anyone on the phone about the problem. We are always told to call back, or we leave a voice mail and we never get a call back. You might want to check out this web site:
Kadant Composites Warranty Program.
It will give some pics on there with some of the problems they are having with their products. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me at jantwilite@charter.net.

GeoDeck Issues

08/17/2007 04:15 PM mavesko

Yes it is true that GeoDeck had some problems with material manufactured in 2003, However, non of the material produced beofore that time period, or after has had a problem. Also, Kandant Composites (the company that manufactured GeoDeck in 2003) has sold the company to LDI Composites in October of 2005. LDI continues to research and improve both the composition of the product, as well as the production methods involved. The biggest issue with the deteriation problem is that it takes a couple years in the elements for the boards to show any signs of failure. This leads people to believe that the problem is current, when in fact it is limited to material produced in 2003, which was recalled by Kadant. All product produced under LDI Composites has a lazer engraved date code on the edge of each board so that if an issue should arrise, it can be traced back to each individual ingredient in that board the day it was made, as well as what line it was produced on and who was operating the line that day. Needless to say, many improvements have been made in the last 2 years.

Thanks Jan, I appreciate your feed back, we ended up doing trex due the it being significantly cheaper and people we know in our area not ever having any mold problems. Good luck with dealing with geo.

GEODECK

10/02/2007 06:00 PM pbmoore

I found this bulletin board because I was looking for information about the GEODECK warranty. I've had GEODECK for a little over 2 years. It started out being unsightly with mold and shrinkage, but now it is quickly deteriorating. Yes, I understand that LDI (new owner of GEODECK)is now improving the composite, but they are giving home owners the run around and not honoring the warranty. That is very troubling if you are thinking of buying their product.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do, because the deck is totally unusuable. I am interested in knowing what product to use to replace it, even though, I'll probably being paying for it.

DO NOT BUY GEODECK

10/03/2007 01:37 PM pbmoore

The makers of GEODECK have admitted that the composite they produced from 2002 to 2003 was faulty. They used legal shananigans (LDI Composites is a shell company that bought out Kadant Composites) to avoid the full impact of their mistake.

Several governement agencies have recommended to me that the next step is a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. Anyone intested in joining can contact me.

Paula,

I Hope you are checking back on this site-I have tried to e-mail you several times-but my mail comes back to me as "undeliverable". I showed your e-mail to my husband and we are both very interested in the class action lawsuit. Please contact me again with further info-I would like to be able to e-mail you directly, if possible, to keep in better contact on the situation. Thanks,
Amy

Lawsuit

10/17/2007 08:18 AM geodeckman

I am attempting to organize a class action lawsuit already. Would you like to share information (i.e., phone number). I have searched and found a few individuals on my own through internet resources and contaacted them by using these means. If you do not want to reply with a phone number, I can email with an address. It is unbelievable what this company is trying to do. I have contacted many people at Kadant and even the engineer (at his residence) who knew about the problem. I have been very persistant.....
