clogged ducts?

07/25/2008 09:17 PM sailor86

I live in a 3-BR mobile home. At the front of the trailer are my son's room, my room, a bath, and the heater/AC closet. For some odd reason, our two BRs, closest to the AC closet, are the most difficult to keep cool. The rest of the house is fine, I often wear a sweat jacket in the LR. But in the two BRs I have to run the ceiling fans on at least medium and incorporate a floor fan. This should not be. By my simple logic, I see the problem as kinked ducting, which would be a bear of a job to rectify. But before I go to extremes, does anybody have any clue as to what else it may be?

It could be what you suspect, or it could be poor duct design not sending enough air. You probably don't have returns in the rooms and undercutting the door makes for less privacy.

You might also have those rooms hit directly by sun all day.

Yes, you really have to find out the MAKE and MODEL to get good answers. There IS more than one machine made.

what's the procedure now?

No, only one of the rooms gets direct sun and that's only in the morning. This is all overhead ducting so I suppose that means one would have to hack away at the ceiling, make a big mess, and then correct the problem. Maybe a coupling came undone? Is it possible to diagnose the problem without the mess?

Snake inspector

You could use a mirror and flashlight to see how far down the duct you can see to observe if a kink or clog. Running a snake with a ball can tell if there is a stop where a duct fell apart. A more expensive way is with a plumber's snake camera.

However, if there is but one small duct to a room, it is probable it isn't carrying enough cooling air.

which one?

make and model of which: the AC unit or the mobile home. I'm pretty sure the info is on the AC unit itself but I'm not sure about the mobile home. Isn't there a plaque somewhere that has all the necessary info? I've looked around the trailer and have not found one.
