Foundations and Framing (HA1513)

It’s all about structure in this episode of Bob Vila’s Home Again. Bob’s back on Cape Cod at the Mashpee home site where the foundation forms are set and ready for the concrete pour. Bob meets with project supervisor Joe Valle to discuss how building materials lead to affordability in homebuilding. Valle explains the specifics of the concrete pour as it takes place. Then it’s on to the framing for this single-family home, as they install the first-floor deck and frame up the first wall. Bob goes through the entire framing process with contractor Wes Lohr as the the first wall is pieced together — from the sill and top plates, to the jack stud and headers. Together they map out the position of the studs to accommodate doors and windows, and configure a wall that matches the plans. Then they sheathe the entire wall with LP oriented strand board (OSB) exterior sheathing, which is specifically engineered to make nailing it to the studs easy and foolproof. Bob looks at nailguns and how they have revolutionized the building industry. And, at last, the first wall is complete and together they raise it, brace it, and fasten it to the foundation.
