Rebuilding the walls to blend in with the original cornice requires a traditional three-coat plaster job, starting with the scratch coat, then the rough coat, and finally the white or finish coat.

Hardwood Floors, Traditional Plaster, and Fiberglass Drywall (HA1514)
Bob Vila’s Home Again returns to New York’s Upper West Side, where trades of all kinds are continuing work on the Brownstone floor-through apartment. Bob starts in the large central living room where quarter-sawn ash flooring is being installed. This specially milled hardwood has a straight grain rather than a cathedral grain, which results in a beautifully grained, stable plank. Bob watches the glue-free installation and looks at how the layout is planned to maximize aesthetics and minimize waste. Then it’s on to the plastering where Boro Plastering is creating a traditional three-coat plaster wall that will blend with the original ceiling cornice discovered during demolition. In the kitchen, Thorough Construction is back to install 5/8-inch fiberglass drywall. Replacing the paper-faced drywall with fiberglass on both sides will protect the walls from invasive mold and fungus. Installer Chris McEvoy shows how to handle drywall installation with metal studs and high ceilings.
