Installing a Composite Deck and Fiberglass Drywall (HA1520)

Buy Show Video

Bob is in Mashpee, where they are pouring the footings for the new deck, installing composite decking, and drywalling the interior. Starting outside, Bob joins the crew as they pour the footings for the deck using an innovative new wheelbarrow designed especially for concrete and liquid pours. Then Wes Lohr and his crew attach the ledger board for the deck, spacing it ¾ to one inch from the house to allow the cedar siding to breathe and snow and water to drain away. The pressure-treated lumber (PTL) joists, posts, and band joist are all secured before the composite decking is screwed in place. This WeatherBest composite decking is made of wood waste fibers and recycled plastic to make a sturdy, maintenance-free material. It has an embossed grain and comes pre-drilled for easy assembly. Inside the house, Georgia-Pacific's DensArmor Plus fiberglass-faced drywall is being installed. Unlike paper-faced drywall, this product resists moisture, mold, and mildew. It is slightly heavier than traditional drywall, but cuts, scores, and installs the same way. The crew uses self-stick nylon tape on seams and paper tape in corners and at the ceiling for a sturdier finish. Homeowners can paint right over the drywall or apply a plaster skim coat first.
