Kitchen Remodel - Miami, FL

Home Again

Season 6 -

Kitchen Remodel

Miami, FL

This colorful 13 episode project set in Bob's home town features the remodeling and expansion of the kitchen and family room of a 15 year old suburban Miami tract house. Bob teams up with one of Miami's highest-profile architects, Laurinda Spear of Arquitectonica, to give the project a playful flair while maintaining a practical perspective on the location and scale of the house.

The primary concern of the homeowner is lack of space, her eat-in kitchen is cramped and offers little storage. The original builder's cabinets aren't in bad shape but need a facelift, and the appliances while well cared for are likely to start breaking down in the near future. The tiny family room has been outgrown and is unfortunately overpowered by a large entertainment center. Redecorating aside, what the place nneds most is to be enlarged.

Bob enlists the help of Cuban-American contractor Ed Weller, and they and the architect set out to keep the new construction at a scale appropriate to the existing house yet innovative and fun. Walls for the new addition are built using ICFs?insulated concrete forms?an innovative wall system in which styrofoam blocks are stacked and secured with steel bars and then filled with concrete. Stucco application and glass block installation are also showcased. A tropical theme is woven throughout the project. The family room partition takes on the shape of a banana leaf while the custom designed stained glass feature window for the new addition bears the shape of a slice of exotic fruit. Unique mosaic tile inserts, adapted from the works of popular Miami artist Romero Britto, are exactingly installed on the floor. Out back landscapers turn the tired yard into a useful space to relax in the shade with a state-of-the-art spa and a outdoor grill in the new backyard lanai.
