Season 12 - Vermont Farmhouse Quechee, VT
The first project of the 12th season of Home Again finds Bob in the the countryside of Quechee, Vt. This wooded setting with its quaint towns and covered bridges provides the perfect backdrop for building a traditional Vermont style farmhouse. Bob works with the Quechee Lakes Development Company to build a residence that hearkens back to the past yet is fitted out for the needs of the family in the new millennium.
The community of Quechee Lakes is the largest land use plan in the entire New England area. It includes two golf courses, ski hill, clubhouse, and hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, and show shoeing trails, giving residents access to year round outdoor activities. Because of the proximity of other cultural centers such as Hanover, N.H. and Woodstock, Vt., Quechee Lakes and the town of Quechee pride themselves in the idea that they are a place where one can find "civilized seclusion."
While the house in Quechee embodies the ideals of rural living, it also allows its residents to connect with the outside world and conduct business from their home base via the concept of the "connected home". Homeowners will be able to access the World Wide Web to conduct business, as well as control many of the functions of their home from a computer. Real time video of the house can be remotely monitored while the homeowners are away, and lighting, TV, and other electrical appliances will have pre-adjusted settings for various situations whether it be entertaining, relaxation, or absence.
Bob also visits several local craftspeople and tours area historic homes, and will be following the progress of the Cobb Hill Co-housing Community in nearby Hartland, Vt. At Cobb Hill, custom builders Albee O'Hara are fulfilling the dreams of a number of families that have come together to pursue a more rural, environmentally friendly, and sustainable lifestyle on a working farm. The design of the community includes a large common house, shared utilities, and smaller
duplex and single units for families. This portion of the show will be dedicated to exploring green building techniques and self-sufficiency of water, food, energy, building materials, and waste processing.
