Home Again

Season 12 -

Victorian Restoration

Medford, MA

Medford, Massachusetts, the United State's fifth oldest city, is the setting for the second half of the twelfth season of "Bob Vila's Home Again." Located just five miles from downtown Boston, Bob's scouts discovered a Victorian-era house in a neighborhood of family homes on tree-lined streets that was past due for a full-scale renovation. The home's new owners, a work-at-home family, have set goals to modernize the home's floor plan, update the building's mechanical and electrical systems, and add home office and work spaces for two busy professionals.

Bob and his crew enter the project with the goal of reworking the design of the house for the lifestyle of a modern family. Most of the large-scale changes take place in the home's interior. In typical Victorian fashion, the house was originally arranged as a rabbit warren of small rooms. The new layout calls for an open floor plan, a glass block atrium, a large family room, a state-of-the-art media room, and a modernized kitchen. Because the family works at home, an adjacent dairy barn will be transformed into a studio space, and offices will be added in the basement and top floor of the house.

The exterior of the house will change to distinguish the new and old construction. A covered walkway will join the main house and the converted barn, as well as provide a means for connecting and relating the two buildings. The new section will be sided and roofed in copper to create a juxtaposition of new and old. Other modern accents of color and glass will give the house an eclectic yet unified exterior look.

From the start, the plan included a unique wiring plan that would take advantage of the latest wired and wireless technology to provide fast and reliable Internet connectivity, home security, and a peerless whole house entertainment experience. The wiring plan connects each room to

a central control panel that allows data, voice, and video signals to be shared from room to room. Not only will the house have its own internal computer network (allowing the homeowners to work from anywhere in the house), but also a dedicated high-speed Internet connection that will help them monitor the house when they are away.
