Under-sink filtration unit and faucet for filtered drinking water.

Water gate
A gate used to control the flow of water in a dam overflow.

Water guard
A turned up edge on valley metal or continuous wall flashing; used to prevent water migration under the roof system.

Water hammer
Noise, created by a water surge or rapid flow change of water, in a steam system. When a change of direction is reached, by water being carried along in air, both at the same velocity, it cannot smoothly turn the corner due to its mass. When it strikes the pipe, it makes a hammering noise.

Water hammer arrestor
A device installed near a fixture to absorb the hydraulic shock caused by a sudden shutoff of water.

Water heater
Device for heating and storing water. Heat is generated by gas, electric, or steam.

Water horse power (whp)
The calculated horse power produced by the pump using the formula WHP = head x gpm/3960.

Water jacket
A heat exchanger element enclosed in a boiler. Water is circulated with a pump through the jacket where it picks up heat from the combustion chamber after which the heated water circulates to heat distribution devices. A water jacket is also an enclosed water-filled chamber in a tankless coiled water heater. When a faucet is turned on water flows into the water heater heat exchanger. The water in the chamber is heated and transfers heat to the cooler water in the heat exchanger and is sent through the hot water outlet to the appropriate faucet.

Water level
Surface level of water.

Water mains
Large diameter pipes which transport water from the plant or well to the area where it will be used, with individual lines running into the house.
