Any ice that forms would be *inside* the appliance. I don't know how it would get *outside* to end up of the floor.

The crackling you hear could be the normal sounds of defrosting occurring (see the following link).

"Ice" should not form anywhere inside the freezer besides where water was left standing like in an ice cube tray, etc.. "Frost" will normally develop on the evaporator (cooling) coil and periodically be melted by the defrost system (see the following link).

That defrost water is then funnelled to the moistural pan under the fridge where it evaporates.
